With support from Konstnärsnämnden, ”Pilglas” took its concept further by exploring new materials and cultural influences.

We participated in a bamboo basket weaving course in Chihayaakasaka, Osaka, a region renowned for its long tradition of bamboo craftsmanship. There, we learned the fundamentals of bamboo weaving and how to construct forms suitable for glassblowing. We then collaborated with the glassblowers at Studio Fresco, experimenting with their glassblowing techniques using the bamboo molds we had created. Through this process, we discovered that, like willow, bamboo is both durable and, when moist, resistant to fire.

Our vision is to unite Japanese bamboo weavers and Swedish willow weavers in a collaborative process, weaving with both materials according to our designs. Glass will then be blown into these forms by both Japanese and Swedish glassblowers, creating unique works that fuse traditions and techniques from both cultures.
